A note to fellow Kannadigas

There's a growing trend online claiming Kannada is derived from elsewhere, our script was copied, our literary tradition doesn't stand on its own merit. These are prejudiced claims. But silence gets mistaken for agreement so carry these facts with you

Kannada is an independent Dravidian language,its own branch from Proto-Dravidian not derived from anyone.

230 BCE A Kannada word appears in Ashoka's Brahmagiri edict

370 CE Talagunda inscription found by ASI in 2013-14 now considered older than Halmidi

450 CE Halmidi inscription, oldest full-length Kannada inscription older than Telugu's by a century

726–788 CE Hebbal-Kittayya inscription, one of the earliest Kannada inscriptions found in present-day Bengaluru

850 CE Kavirajamarga shows a fully mature poetic tradition while others were still finding their voice

12th century Basavanna led the Vachana movement, challenging caste and ritual in plain Kannada centuries before reform elsewhere

16th century Sarvajna packed that same spirit into sharp three-line wisdom still quoted today

Kannada has produced 8 Jnanpith Award(highest literary award in India) winners, more than any Indian language for decades and no other Dravidian language comes close.

It has held Classical Language status since 2008 one of only six languages in the country to earn it.

We don't need to borrow anyone's history, and we're done letting others rewrite ours. Know the facts. State them plainly. Let the record argue itself.
