Angelina Jolie delivers one of the best performances of her iconic career with her latest film #Maria (🌟🌟🌟🌟). This is a good film carried by a great performance. I’ll get into some of my issues with the movie itself in more detail below, but Jolie absolutely deserves all the acclaim for her portrayal of Maria Callas. Her performance alone elevates this film. I would be stunned if Jolie missed out on an Oscar nomination.

Maria is the story of the life of the iconic opera singer Maria Callas. The film takes place in the 1970s in Paris near the end of Maria’s life, as she reflects on the highs and lows of her famed career, all of which have left her alone & lost in her final years. The storytelling & filmmaking in Maria is undeniably similar to Bradley Cooper’s Maestro: there’s use of black & white to show past sequences of Maria’s life, there’s an enormous amount of introspection on the part of the titular character, and the massive set pieces recreating some of the Maria’s best performances are the highlight of the film, all of which are similar to Maestro. While Maria excels at the performance set pieces in the same way Maestro did, just like Maestro, Maria’s biggest downfall is its writing. The writing here is not exceptional.

But Angelina Jolie is exceptional. Jolie makes up for average writing & slow pacing with her brilliance. Every moment Jolie is on screen is electric. Her ability to act through facial expressions, in particular her eyes, is a gift that very few actors can master. She’s both tremendously confident & tremendously vulnerable at the same time throughout this entire film. And above all, Jolie’s singing knocked me on my ass.

I wrote yesterday about Matt Damon & how he’s a uniquely intelligent actor. I consider Jolie to be in the same category as Damon: she is one of the most thoughtful actresses in Hollywood history & she picks her roles very carefully. Whenever Jolie decides to jump, I always try to consider the reasons why Jolie picks a project.

Here, it’s clear. The similarities between Maria’s life & Jolie’s life are undeniable. Two gifted & extraordinarily talented women who needed to fight for agency over their own lives throughout their careers, despite all their talent & success. Jolie empties her soul into this film & you can feel it. When the credits roll on this movie & the film wraps, it’s obvious why Jolie chose to embrace such a difficult role.

Angelina Jolie is an icon & Hollywood legend. Maria is just more proof of that statement.
