I once dated a “born again” girl. She spoke the language of church. She knew the Scriptures. She prayed. But behind closed doors, the character was different. The relationship hurt me deeply. I was humiliated. Rejected. Broken in ways I never expected from someone who claimed to love God.
And in my pain, I made a dangerous conclusion:
“Maybe a non-believer is better than a believer.”
So I chose differently the next time.
I dated a very caring friend who was not born again. She respected me. She loved me gently. She was present. No church drama. No spiritual superiority. No manipulation. Just kindness. And I told myself, “This is better.”
I convinced myself that character is enough. I said, “I will lead her to Christ. I will disciple her myself. I will help her grow spiritually.”
But slowly, something began to shift.
She wasn’t pulling me toward God — and I wasn’t strong enough to pull her upward either.
Church became optional. Prayer became inconsistent. My hunger for God reduced. My fire went down. Conviction became negotiable. Spiritual discipline faded. By the time I was ending that relationship, I was in a very bad place spiritually.
And that’s when I understood something powerful:
Association is influence.
The Bible says in 1 Corinthians 15:33, “Do not be deceived: bad company corrupts good character.” It doesn’t say bad company destroys immediately. It says it corrupts — slowly, subtly, over time.
It matters who you marry. It matters who you date. It matters who you consistently give access to your heart.
This is not about condemning unbelievers. This is about understanding spiritual compatibility.
Two people can be kind. Two people can respect each other. Two people can genuinely care.
But if you are running toward God and the other person is not running in the same direction, eventually one person slows down.
And most times, it is the one who once burned with fire.
The Bible asks in 2 Corinthians 6:14, “Can two walk together unless they agree?” Agreement is not just about love. It is about direction. Vision. Spiritual hunger. Conviction.
I learned the hard way that you cannot disciple someone you are emotionally attached to and expect to remain unaffected. Love blinds. Attachment weakens boundaries. You think you are leading — until you realize you are drifting.
If I had married her, I would not just have married a person. I would have married a direction. I would have married a spiritual climate. I would have married an influence.
And influence is powerful.
Marriage is not just about peace in the house. It is about the spiritual future of your life. Your prayer life. Your children. Your convictions. Your eternity focus.
A person you associate with daily will either:
• Increase your hunger for God
• Or normalize your distance from Him
There is no neutral ground.
Pain made me make a wrong decision. Bitterness made me compromise. Hurt made me lower my spiritual standards.
But God used that experience to teach me something deep:
Do not choose based on pain. Do not choose based on reaction. Do not choose based on fear. Choose based on alignment.
Because the person you marry is not just your partner. They become your atmosphere.
And atmosphere determines growth.
Be careful who has access to your heart. Be careful who shapes your daily conversations. Be careful who influences your spiritual temperature.
Because whether you admit it or not — you will become like the people you consistently love.
