Venezuela needs emergency aid.

Urgently.

But don't ask the victims of decades of corruption to entrust their survival to the very people who brought the country to this point.

The hospitals collapsed long before the earthquake.

The emergency response system had already failed.

The heavy machinery wasn't there.

The lives that could have been saved weren't lost only because the earth shook. They were lost because a nation had already been stripped of its ability to respond.

Now there are reports from the ground that relief supplies meant for survivors are being stolen before reaching those who need them most.

That is why this recovery cannot become another opportunity for corruption.

Humanitarian aid must reach Venezuelans directly, with full transparency, independent oversight, and accountability.

The Venezuelan people should not have to survive an earthquake only to lose the aid meant to save them.
