After he won the Pulitzer Prize, Palestinian writer Mosab Abu Toha was invited onto MSNBC where he was promptly interrogated about why he wasn't doing more to humanize the people slaughtering his family members in Gaza.
@artee_49@griptmedia@john_mcguirk Well as you can see subsidy is used in ironic quotation marks.
Do we choose to pay these particular people (TDs) high wages?
As far as I know they’re one of the few groups who can vote to increase their own pay!
The protests in Ireland are not about just fuel! They are about the distance between Ireland on this graph and every other modern and developed economy. Ireland is second wealthiest but gets waaaaay less than any other country for that wealth. By a golden mile.
That visual gap in this graph? That’s what people are protesting. It’s a lack of infrastructure and the everyday enshittification of services, the economy, and the additional difficulty of trying to live, relative to peers in any other country. It also highlights why people don’t get uniformly listened to! - because there is no government architecture to engage meaningfully across this huge gap.
That gap is a three hour drive to work in traffic, a 14 month wait for an MRI, buses that don’t arrive, trains that don’t exist, schools that have no places for your kids, houses that are unaffordable, pubs that close before midnight, €12 sandwiches, expensive fuel.
People feel this gap, even if they can’t explain it precisely. And that builds into resentment, and ultimately protest. Fuel just happened to be the next thing that could be pointed to, today.

✅ Comedian Theo Von: “That’s crazy though if you’re the fucking terrorists... If you wanna stop ‘em stand in front of the fucking mirror.”
One of the grubbiest of political strokes - at a time when people are really struggling.
Former finance minister Paschal Donohoe provided an extra €10million in funding to the World Bank than it had requested

How do you land a job with a salary of €600,000? Well you just buy your future employer (World Bank) off with an additional €10 million of Irish taxpayers money, right after you leave the peasants with a budget that benefited nobody.
Fine Gael should be made answer how this happened! Politics is at an all time low in Ireland!
I spent sixteen months reporting this story. It was deep, painful, and at times unbearable.
It follows how surveillance tech is rewriting Gaza in real time — and what it’s doing to the people inside it. Read in @NYMag
