New York City is under a Weather Alert, with wind chills near or below 0°F. An Enhanced Code Blue is in effect 24 hours a day.
Homeless outreach teams are actively canvassing the city around the clock, offering transportation to shelters and warm, safe spaces. No one will be turned away.
In minutes, exposure can cause frostbite, hypothermia, and permanent tissue and nerve damage.
Do not stay outdoors longer than necessary. Never leave skin exposed. Cover your face, hands, ears, and neck.
If you see someone who may need help, call 311. For emergencies, call 911.
@NYCMayor Zohran Mamdani said “Across our city, dedicated public servants are clearing crosswalks and bus stops, melting down snow ridges, spreading salt and conducting relentless outreach to bring people indoors. As this critical work continues, I urge all New Yorkers who can to stay indoors, look out for your neighbors, and call 311 if you see someone who needs help.”
Under Code Blue protocols, outreach teams have expanded canvassing across all five boroughs to connect vulnerable New Yorkers with shelter, Safe Havens, drop in centers, and warming buses. Intake procedures are relaxed so anyone can come inside immediately. @NYCHealthSystem has deployed 20 overnight mobile warming units that provide cold weather relief, medical care, and access to warming centers, hospitals, or shelters. These units operate nightly from 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. for the duration of Code Blue.
As part of an all hands response, the City has expanded warming bus capacity and strengthened coordination across agencies. This includes 20 warming buses near hospitals, drop in centers, and subway stations, enhanced warming centers at 11 NYC Health and Hospitals facilities and seven Gotham Health centers, expanded outreach by adult mental health providers, overtime authorization for outreach staff and contractors, and coordinated engagement with shelter providers, faith organizations, and hospitals.
City agencies have aligned public messaging on warming buses, warming centers, and homeless outreach. @NotifyNYC has issued multiple alerts in 13 languages, including ASL, reaching nearly 1.5 million New Yorkers. Information has been shared with 43 Strengthening Community partners and approximately 8,000 nonprofit partners. NYC Emergency Management has also transmitted guidance to every elected official.
Additional outreach has reached more than 2,000 service providers through the NYC Advance Warning System, supporting organizations that serve people with disabilities and others with access and functional needs. NYCEM continues daily interagency coordination calls through the Winter Weather Emergency Steering Committee with participation from about 35 agencies. Mayor Mamdani has also released multiple public service announcements urging New Yorkers to stay safe during extreme cold.
Love that there’s a word for this 😂 also HATE that the curb cuts (which New Yorkers NEED in order to move around the city, especially ppl with mobility aids) become unusable every time it snows. Plus once the streets are plowed the snowbanks become EXHAUSTING to shovel 😭
Snow is nature's urban planner: It can show us what parts of the road drivers don't use — and what can be reclaimed for pedestrians.
Post photos and videos of all the #sneckdowns you see and tag us and @NYCMayor so today's winter wonderland can inspire better streets all year!
As dangerously cold temperatures move through New York, we have opened 10 warming centers across all five boroughs to provide safe, heated indoor spaces for New Yorkers in need. Centers will be open through at least Monday evening at the following locations: Bronx Gompers Campus, 455 Southern Boulevard DeWitt Clinton Campus, 100 West Mosholu Parkway Manhattan Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis High School, 120 West 46th Street Manhattan Center for Science and Mathematics Campus, 260 Pleasant Avenue Brooklyn Midwood High School, 2839 Bedford Avenue Urban Assembly for Law and Justice, 283 Adams Street Queens Jamaica Campus, 167-01 Gothic Drive Long Island City High School, 14-30 Broadway Staten Island Curtis High School, 105 Hamilton Avenue New Dorp High School, 465 New Dorp Lane

Devastated and furious at the passage of this bill gutting healthcare and putting so many at risk. Deeply concerned for so many of my patients. Impact by the numbers below. If you have any explainers or resources please share!
Starting residency tonight, both terrified and exhilarated. Very reminiscent of the feeling I had at the start line of my very first marathon 10 years ago. Going to try and get some sleep before this very different flavor of marathon 🫣
