Nobody is saying foreigners can’t legally work at South African universities, nor is anyone saying a PhD automatically means you must go into academia. That is not the argument, and you know it.

The issue is the high proportion of foreign academics teaching in SA while unemployment among South Africans is so high, and whether suitably qualified South Africans are being sidelined.

The legitimate question is whether universities are properly complying with immigration and labour laws when appointing foreign academics, particularly where suitably qualified South Africans are available.

So the whole lecture about postgraduate degrees, multiple lecturers per module and teaching “international postgraduate students” is largely beside the point. 😂 You’ve taken a very specific concern about employment and recruitment practices and turned it into an argument about whether foreigners are capable of teaching.

And the “I, a foreigner”, “INTERNATIONAL post graduate students” and “sharpened gaze on the world” bit? Please. 😭 Nobody questioned your academic credentials.

A foreign academic can be brilliant and South Africans can question why suitably qualified locals are being overlooked. These things are not mutually exclusive.

Sometimes defending everything simply because it involves foreigners means deliberately missing the actual point being made…..
