Imagine being a drug dealer and spotting two World Cup mascots walking down your street. You'd probably assume they're filming a commercial, attending an event, or just taking photos with fans.
What you wouldn't expect is an undercover police operation. Yet that's exactly what happened in Peru, where officers disguised as World Cup mascots approached a suspected drug dealer before carrying out a real arrest.
When I first saw the photo, I thought it had to be satire. But it was a genuine police raid, and somehow the fact that it actually worked makes the whole story even more ridiculous.
Police in Peru took a novel approach to clamping down on drug trafficking on Wednesday as they conducted a raid in Lima disguised as the 2026 World Cup mascots. https://t.co/i92yemJwjJ
