There are a lot of new interns in vc this summer, and many new VCs generally.

Will share here some advice I give to all younger VCs I work with.

It is very easy to play VC-VC, socialize with other VCs, get invited to retreats and such, hangout at random networking events, shoot shit, feel like you are in the know because you hear useless rumors about internal VC quibbles, or news about already established companies. Calendar fills up with nonsense before we even realize.

All that is sideshow. Never let the sideshow become the main thing. Don’t do what average VCs do, esp because average VC sucks :-)

We get paid (esp as early stage VCs) to have theses and pov on tech trends and markets, to go out and meet founders early where they are, and work with extreme curiosity and hustle. We have to ask smart questions to understand team-market fits, product value props, talk to potential customers and partners, evaluate risks, build conviction leaning in/out of investment opportunities, and move fast. And do all that without becoming transactional, and with empathy for founders’ journey.

That is our job.

Let the main thing remain the main thing!
