Anyone with a pregnancy complication associated with future CVD (Box 1 below) should be identified and screened for CVD risk factors within the 1st postpartum year (Box 2). Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy and gestational diabetes require additional follow-up (Box 3).

Unfortunately, most patients in the US don't get adequate (or any!) primary care after pregnancy. Barriers are many, but so are opportunities. Covid-19 has added urgency while creating new ways (e.g., telehealth) for us to improve primary care after complicated pregnancies. 3/4
