Apple is unlikely to shift iPhone production to the U.S., even under a proposed 25% tariff, according to top analyst Ming-Chi Kuo.
The comment comes after former President Donald Trump warned Apple that iPhones sold in the U.S. must be made domestically or face tariffs. Trump criticized Apple for expanding manufacturing in India, particularly Foxconn's $1.5 billion facility near Chennai.
Kuo explained that absorbing the tariff is still more cost-effective than moving production back to the U.S., calling Trump’s threat more political than economic.
He added that relocating iPhone assembly for the U.S. market within Trump’s term is unrealistic and that tariff threats could continue even if Apple negotiates a temporary deal.
Despite Trump’s pressure, Apple remains committed to India. A Counterpoint Research report showed that 18% of global iPhones were made in India in 2024, with that number expected to rise to 32% in 2025. Apple has made no indication it plans to change that strategy.
