When I heard that RM had been appointed the first-ever Global Ambassador of the National Museum of Korea, my first thought was not, "What a great choice." It was, "Who else could it have been?"
Most ambassador positions are given only because someone is famous. This one is different. The National Museum of Korea has never officially appointed a global ambassador since opening its doors. That makes this decision all the more meaningful. They were looking for someone who could represent not only Korea, but also its artistic spirit and cultural heritage. RM has been preparing for this role for years without ever knowing it.
As you already know, RM's love for art and Korean cultural heritage is nothing new. For years, he has visited museums and galleries around the world, collected contemporary art, encouraged countless fans to discover artists and exhibitions, donated generously to the preservation of Korean cultural heritage overseas, and earned recognition from the international art world, including being named to Artnet's Innovators List in 2022. I have an ARMY friend who has visited the exact same museums and galleries RM once visited every time she comes to Korea. I doubt she is the only one.
There is another reason I smiled when I read the news. The person who selected RM is the museum's director, Yoo Hong-jun. For many Koreans of my generation, he is a household name. I grew up reading his books exploring Korea's historical sites, traditional arts, and cultural treasures. His books have sold more than five million copies. Few people have done more to help ordinary Koreans appreciate the richness of our cultural heritage. I guess a great person recognizes another great person when they see one.
Even the commemorative gift presented to RM reflected the museum's confidence in this partnership: a special scroll edition reproducing the original Daedongyeojido, Kim Jeong-ho's map of Korea from the Joseon Dynasty.
Created in 1861, Daedongyeojido is one of Korea's greatest cultural treasures. Stretching nearly 6.7 meters when fully unfolded, it consists of 22 foldable booklets that fit together to form a map of the entire Korean Peninsula. What makes it so extraordinary is not just its amazing accuracy, comparable in many ways to modern satellite maps, but also its ingenious accordion-style design, which made it portable and allowed geographical knowledge to reach far more people than ever before. Even today, it is regarded as one of the world's finest cartographic achievements of the 19th century.
The gift may have been ceremonial, but to me it seemed to symbolize the passing of Korea's cultural legacy into capable hands.
I also love one practical detail. RM will also participate in the recording of multilingual audio guides (probably English) for museum visitors. Just imagine walking through the galleries while listening to his voice introducing Korea's history and treasures. I have little doubt that this alone will inspire countless ARMYs from around the world to add the National Museum of Korea to the very top of their travel itinerary.
And who knows what the future holds? Decades from now, when RM is much older, I would not be surprised if he were asked to serve as the museum's director one day, or perhaps even as Korea's Minister of Culture. It may sound ambitious today, but Korea has appointed artists and actors to lead the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism before. Someone with RM's lifelong commitment to art, literature, history, and culture would hardly seem out of place.
"Mr secretary! The floor is hers. You know, there is a chairman. That's me" -- even the Republican committee chair is losing patience with Markwayne Mullin, who is gripping a stress ball as he clearly struggles to control his temper
My sister Maya and I were profoundly shaped by the influence of our mom, Ann Dunham. Giving Maya a preview of the Obama Presidential Center, including a new sculpture by Maya Lin dedicated to our mom’s memory, was truly special.
.@GunnySpeaksOut has a message for Donald Trump: monuments are supposed to honor principles, sacrifice, and service. NOT a single politician. The "Arc De Trump" is a slap in the face to all veterans and military families. It's time to speak out against this would-be monstrosity before it's too late.
The idiots drove a presidential motorcade - including the 10-ton "Beast" that transports the president - across a newly laid liner for the Reflecting Pool. Who's brilliant idea was that? Now the liner is damaged and peeling off and they are blaming "vandals". A photo of the vandals is shown here.
So much of my story—and Barack's—runs through the South Side of Chicago. We had so much fun going down memory lane with @People, sharing moments from the decades we've spent together, the opening of the Obama Presidential Center, and the work we still have left to do in our next chapter. We hope you'll check out the interview: https://t.co/N7HgrjrQRj
Rep. Escobar tells Markwayne Mullin about how she met with a detainee whose arm was so badly broken that it was visible to the naked eye, yet all he was being given to treat it was aspirin
BREAKING: In a huge win, a federal court blocked parts of Trump's executive order targeting mail voting.
The judge halted:
✔️A mandate to create lists of verified U.S. citizens eligible to vote in each state.
✔️ USPS' decision to only mail absentee ballots from certain individuals.
THANK YOU FOR CONFIRMING:
1. There are cameras monitoring the Reflecting Pool.
2. No one entered and made a 350 foot gash.
3. No one dumped massive amounts of fertilizer into a 6.5 million gallon pool.
Because if anyone did, trump would be shoving that video in our faces.
‼️ USPS will not deliver mail ballots unless states hand over their voter lists to the Trump administration, according to Postmaster General David Steiner.
“You are going to make a decision that people cannot vote by mail,” @SenGaryPeters (D-Mich.) said. “That’s unacceptable.” https://t.co/MonrhnbHAE
