@UrbanLo Privatisation of sectors that can easily be handled better by private competing businesses than what the parasitals, the SOEs like Eskom is doing with generation, is the obvious way to go. Don't be stuck in a narrow-minded socialist rut. ANC will never understand economics.

US doesn't have the same high unemployment as SA. Salaries are much higher in the USA, as in China. Chinese factories are very efficient, cost-effective, and have great economies of scale. You can't compare apples and pineapples.

Eskom isn't the only game in town. We need competitive energy sector and certainly privatisation of the generation part.

The local municipal electrician is known to illegally connect houses for a nice fee. Muni keeps him employed. It is R 1.26 bn in debt with Eskom.

Eskom as it is should be taken out of it's misery, euthanised ASAP.

@1RadioFan @jacob_maroga Eskom can never do that, it's impossible for them to retrench, lower wages, increase cost-effectiveness to such a level. Only competition by IPPs that are allowed to compete on a fair level playground can bring prices down. But Eskom, the ANC and SALGA, are still fighting this.

The sooner Eskom as it is can be taken out of it's misery, the energy sector can be liberalised, deregulated, privatised as much is reasonably possible, the better. First ANC out.

@GBADigitalMedia It reflects all the negative sides of a corrupt, inefficient near monopoly. The free market and strict, well enforced environmental regulations will force IPPs to practically only produce power from renewable sources. Competing IPPs in open, transparent system 35 years overdue.

@nickhedley I guess this is only the contribution of several energy sources to the grid, does not include behind the meter private rooftop PV, and private power from IPPs wheeled across the grid to mines, industries. Which together should amount to 15 GW capacity or so.
