@pescami Like the style and the depth. But 15 years ago I listened for hours daily; now a few minutes a week. Tried almost all podcasts and only Planet money every fifth episode sticks. It’s all bias; NPR suffers from audience capture. Won’t listen to nuts on the right or NPR on the left.
@hubermanlab I’m sold on the benefits, but are there studies showing meditation is better than other forms of relaxation/focus like running, cycling, playing music etc.. Surveys are fine, but are subjective … maybe changes to brain structure or chemistry.
@hubermanlab Anyone have links to good studies on meditation? I’ve seen only self reported surveys & anecdotes, but admittedly, I’m out of date.
Years ago, the studies I read showed meditation had the same benefits as other forms of relaxation like reading or music. Thanks.
@jessesingal “Never expect a man to understand something if his salary depends on his not understanding.” Upton Sinclair
“Never attribute to malice that which can be explained by stupidity” I saw it first from Asimov
“It’s a great life if you don’t weaken”. My gram.
@SamHarrisOrg It’s so rare I hear someone publicly admit they were wrong on a substantial belief they’ve had for a long time. Leaving aside whether I agree or disagree, that takes courage.
@garytexasjess @CassyWearsHeels I’ve found it too time consuming and sometimes they’re so different, it’s hard to figure out what’s true. But good for you for trying.
@CassyWearsHeels What I find scary is a Pew Research poll showing that about 50% (from memory so could be a bit off) of people aged 19 to 50 use social media as their primary source of political news.
@davidmcraney I teach a couple courses using Burke’s method (my version of it). One thing enables another which makes possible another. Things make more sense and are easier to remember.
@rwang0 Whether centralize or de- some of the benefits are just from shaking things up. My pref for most orgs is hybrid for medium and large and centralized for small.
@sciam@cragcrest One primary source is economics. Media's revenue is based on attention. Outrage at the out-group and acceptance by our in-group are powerful biological motivators. Media tunes what we see to keep us outraged. Hard to see this changing because of ad based revenue models.
@abarrallen What I expect to see in 2022 is studies showing changes in productivity, creativity, morale and other areas during this economic shock. What I worry about is researchers deciding on the answer they want first, then finding the supporting data. Politics is intruding everywhere.
@HiddenBrain Better shows; more objective, but you still have blinds spots. E.g Claiming racism when subjects were told a policy was from Clinton or Obama and some favored Clinton, implies race was the sole differentiator. You do see the flaw in that, right? But thanks for the change.
@HiddenBrain I’m curious on the change in productivity. Most studies were positive for WAH, but it was self reporting. A few (Chinese travel agency), were objective but for a narrow area of work.
@steve_lieber Look for the controls. Y2K had countries who spent little, but similar results. Covid has countries like Taiwan w no lockdown but many restrictions.
