Zurich: I lived there for 3.5 years.

It’s a serious city in a serious country.

Here’s the most honest breakdown of who Zurich works for and who it really doesn’t.

The PROS of Zurich:

- Exemplary "functioning country": Nothing is late, broken, or canceled. Ever. You get used to this standard and can rely on the system. When I visited Rome for family, it felt like pure chaos and unsafety in comparison. You trust the system: how strange is that, right?
- Quality of life and safety: You can put your child on a tram alone; people will help without hesitation, ensuring they reach their destination safely. Walking alone at night, you'll feel completely secure.
- Train station cleanliness and safety test: Passed. Probably the cleanest and safest in Europe. At Zug train station, I was always surprised at how spotless even the bathroom was. You can learn a lot about a country by how it manages its train stations.
- Tax efficiency: If you incorporate or live in Zug, it’s 11.8% CIT and 0% capital gains on shares/crypto.
- No corruption, plus institutions work: I have direct corporate stories where potential problems were handled seriously and professionally (though not as fast as in Singapore).
- Well-connected but "protected": Central in Europe but outside the EU.
- Housing, schooling, healthcare: Consistently high quality.
- Trains: Top-tier infrastructure; 3 hours to Milan, 4 hours to Paris.
- If you ski: This is paradise.
- Air quality: Genuinely exceptional.

The honest CONS:

- Weather: long, dark winters. If you need Mediterranean light and warmth, Zurich is outmost brutal and vitamin D supplementation won't suffice. I still remember the snowy days, super rainy weeks in early October when in Italy or Spain it's still essentially prolongation of summer.
- Cost: brutal if you’re in bootstrapping mode. You’ll feel poorer than the AC technician making 110k/y (this comes from a real actual story). I've never felt so poor in my life as in Switzerland.
- Price/quality: dinners that would be €50 in Italy become 120+ CHF and not always great. Food taste is generally "bland".
- Swiss German: not standard German; integration takes time, especially if you need to work in local companies.
- Cultural vibe: reserved, indirect, limited feedback; getting ghosted happens more frequently, for sure more than in the US.
- 7pm shutdown: I have videos of Zug at 7pm looking like “I Am Legend.” Not fun at all.
- Rigidity: systems work perfectly, but anything that is not 100% a fit with the "handbook" won't be managed fast or properly.
- Cost (again): did I already mention how seriously expensive it is? Picture NYC-level prices for everything.

Who Zurich is IDEAL for:

- Families with a strong income seeking safety and long-term stability.
- Remote high USD earners who prefer order over chaos.
- Individuals escaping political instability (a close friend moved from Germany for this reason).
- Nature enthusiasts who love mountains, biking, hiking, and skiing: it's paradise on earth for you.
- Investors looking for zero capital gains and a stable European base.
- Those who appreciate an international hub that still feels like a large, safe village.

Who it’s NOT ideal for:

- Anyone who needs sun, warmth, and Mediterranean energy to work properly.
- Early-stage founders without capital. You'll suffer a lot there.
- People who enjoy a more energetic lifestyle, vibrant nightlife, or a more "fast-paced" social scene.
- Anyone who struggles with long winters and dark months.

I personally categorize Switzerland alongside Singapore as one of the few places where I am happy paying taxes. They deliver.
