Recap of events in Canada this week, and it’s only Thursday!
In Ottawa, the sentencing hearing resumed for Tamara Lich and Chris Barber. After being found guilty of mischief earlier this year, the Crown is now seeking 7 years in prison for Tamara and 8 years for Chris.
The defence is calling this what it is: cruel and unusual punishment. They’re asking for leniency, including an absolute discharge for Chris, citing their lack of criminal records and the fact that this was a peaceful protest rooted in Charter-protected rights.
This was not a violent uprising. It was a protest sparked by unprecedented government overreach into personal autonomy. Yes, it was loud. Yes, it was disruptive. But blame lies squarely with elected officials and police for the massive mismanagement that let it escalate. Canadians were standing up to decisions that deeply affected their lives, livelihoods, and freedoms.
So how did a protest, resulting in minor criminal charges, turn into the threat of nearly a decade in prison?
Also this week, Parks Canada revoked permits for an American Christian musician set to perform at national historic sites. Why? “Public safety concerns” tied to his political views. Since when do affiliations justify cancelling music in public spaces?
Then, a man in Nova Scotia was removed from an Air Canada flight for wearing a T-shirt showing a real photo of former PM Trudeau in blackface. Offensive? Maybe. Illegal or untrue? No.
To top it off, the federal vaccine injury compensation program has now been exposed for what it really is: a bureaucratic nightmare and, frankly, a fraud on the people it was supposed to help. Years later, most injured Canadians still haven’t seen a cent.
And once again, RBC froze my bank accounts—citing vague “risk concerns.” Just like 2022. No charges. No hearing. No explanation.
This is not about whether you supported the protest or not. It is about principle. It is about fairness, due process, the rule of law and the kind of Canada we want to live in.
What kind of country is this becoming—and are we okay with it?
Let’s get this straight: while rampant violent offenders are released hours after their most recent charges & antisemitic rioters vandalize businesses, terrorize daycares & block traffic without consequences, the Crown wants 7 years prison time for the charge of mischief for Lich & Barber.
How is this justice?
New Three Strikes, You're Out Law will lock up offenders for 10 years without parole, bail or house arrest after third serious conviction.

Our thoughts and support go out to the entire Estevan Police Service and family of the injured officer. As always, the Weyburn Police Service works closely with the Estevan Police Service and will provide the necessary support as they navigate this difficult situation.
Congratulations to all Weyburn Fire Department members who received the 5, 10, 20, 30 and 35 year service award. Your continued dedication to fire prevention, fighting and rescue is appreciated by all!
Snow, snow, snow. Too much snow!
If you don’t have to drive please avoid travel as it will take time to clear passageways. We will once again dig our way out of winter and hopefully find spring soon!
Sending my congratulations to owner and employees as new business MR.SUB officially opens today. Thanks for choosing Weyburn to do business and I wish you all great success!
Great to see so many brave the cold and take in the Christmas spirit together, watching the CP Holiday Train! Always grateful for the donation from CP to the local Salvation Army Weyburn for those in need during the holiday season and more!
Today a significant announcement was made regarding the reopening of Weyburn’s court of Kings Bench (known before as Queens Bench).
I’m very pleased about this announcement and thank the Saskatchewan Government for moving forward with this decision!
Incredible storm we’re seeing tonight. Stay home, do not go out! Stay warm, be safe. Tomorrow we can help our fellow neighbours shovel our way out of another Canadian blizzard.
Join me in congratulating Jerry Mainil Ltd as they celebrate their 60th year anniversary today at River Park!
Through the ups and down of the oil and farming industry, Mainil’s has grown and provided remarkable employment opportunities to many Weyburn residents!
I thank our city emergency services (fire, police and ambulance) who are always their to serve our community during these hard times. If you or anyone needs to talk, please reach out. Our Chaplin service through fire and police is always available to talk to anyone if needed.
My deepest condolences to the families, co-workers and friends of the Saskpower workers who recently passed. I offer my thoughts and prayers through these most difficult times and know as a community we are here to support those who’ve been deeply affected.
