This is a profound distinction in how we learn, develop, and build self-awareness - looking within ourselves rather than collecting things from the outside; letting go of mistaken beliefs instead of adding new information.
The Billion Dollar Mistake
In the book Working With Emotional Intelligence, Daniel Goleman has a chapter called The Billion Dollar Mistake where he describes the failure of most emotional intelligence leadership programs.
In a talk by Zen teacher Shunryu Suzuki he says "Mindfulness practice is not to collect things and put them in your basket, but rather to find something in your sleeve."
This quote is from: From: Inside-out sustainability, Neglect of Our Inner Worlds (Ives et al. 2020, p. 208).
And, a photo I took yesterday at a small Missoula, MT pond.
“Our inner worlds,
such as our emotions, thoughts, identities and beliefs,
lie at the root of sustainability challenges and are fundamental to the solutions to some of the world’s greatest challenges”
"A good dose of awe and wonder, combined with a growth mindset, and the courage to explore, may be our most important tools."
