How many miles can a Porsche transaxle engine really last?

My opinion:

A well-maintained 944, 968 or 928 engine can often go 200,000+ miles (320,000+ km) without needing a full rebuild.

The biggest factor isn’t the mileage.

It’s the maintenance history.

Oil changes.

Cooling system.

Timing belts (where applicable).

And fixing small problems before they become expensive ones.

I’d rather buy a 180,000-mile Porsche with excellent records than a 70,000-mile car that has been neglected.

What’s the highest-mileage transaxle Porsche you’ve seen that was still running well?

But I still think it’s one of the best-value classic sports cars you can buy.

Why?

• Timeless design
• Near 50:50 weight distribution
• Practical enough to actually use
• A genuine Porsche driving experience

One thing I miss about classic Porsches?

Simplicity.

No driving modes.

No giant screens.

No fake engine sounds.

Just you, the steering wheel and the road.

That’s one of the reasons the transaxle cars still feel so special today.

What modern feature could you live without?

The Porsche 968 never became an icon like the 911.

But that’s exactly why I like it.

It was the final evolution of Porsche’s transaxle philosophy:

• Near-perfect balance
• Strong naturally aspirated engine
• Timeless, understated design

I think it’s one of the most underrated driver’s cars Porsche has ever built.

One of the biggest myths about the Porsche 944?

That it’s “just an old Porsche.”

In reality, its near 50:50 weight distribution made it one of the best-balanced sports cars of its era.

That’s why it still feels so rewarding on a twisty road.

The Porsche 944 didn’t become a classic because it was fast.

It became a classic because of how it makes you feel behind the wheel.

✔️ Precise steering
✔️ Near-perfect balance
✔️ Excellent visibility
✔️ A driving experience that rewards skill

Plenty of cars are faster.

Very few are more enjoyable.

• Manual gearbox
• Naturally aspirated engine
• Under 1,400 kg
