Paul Seixas makes history! He becomes the youngest rider ever to win Il Lombardia, one of cycling's five Monuments. Just think about that: a rider this young already has a Monument victory on his palmarès.
He is an exceptional talent. He is the future.
Honestly, I had some doubts about Seixas' condition coming into this race. The season has been incredibly long, he showed signs of fatigue at the World Championships, and this is his first full season at WorldTour level. He's still so young, yet he was already performing at an incredibly high level back in February.
But Seixas is simply out of this world. He's an 👽
The crazy part is that he is just starting, imagine how good Paul Seixas could be in another year or two, when he has even more experience and physical development behind him.
This is the future of cycling. Paul Seixas is the future!
And I have to say, this is a rider I genuinely love watching. I admire him enormously, partly because of his Portuguese ancestry, but also because of the way he approaches the sport. What an incredible rider. What a spectacular victory. Absolutely phenomenal from Paul Seixas!
I also want to highlight Enric Mas, another rider I really love.
Enriqueta is back! He's still got it!
We basically saw the Enric Mas of the Vuelta again today. After the Vuelta, he'd been relatively quiet, and I barely saw anyone talking about him. But the truth is that Mas has come back at exactly the right moment.
He's a very experienced rider who knows how to target his form for the biggest races. And once again, he's timed it perfectly for Il Lombardia, a race where he's already achieved some excellent results in the past.
That's why I gaved him a ⭐️ in my preview, although, looking back, I don't think I gave him enough credit. I should have rated his chances more highly.
As for the other favourites, Remco Evenepoel's performance was more or less what I expected. He simply wasn't climbing at the level we saw from him during the Tour de France. He looked a little more like the classics specialist we've come to know, rather than the dominant climber we saw earlier in the summer.
Then there's Isaac del Toro.
Honestly, this was not a normal performance from Del Toro. Given his level, I can only assume that the knee problem he's been dealing with had a significant impact on his race.
At his best, I would have expected him to be fighting for the victory, or at the very least to be in contention deep into the finale. Could Seixas have dropped him on the climbs? Absolutely. That was always a possibility.
But to finish so far behind suggests that Del Toro simply wasn't anywhere near his best.
Hopefully, we get to see the Mexican back at full strength next season, because he's an exceptional rider in his own right, and I'm sure there are many more great performances to come
