Ye attended the ceremony on Chicago’s South Side honoring his late mother, Dr. Donda West, with the honorary street designation “Dr. Donda West Way.”

Dr. West was a longtime educator and scholar at Chicago State University, where she chaired the English Department and founded the Gwendolyn Brooks Center.

The intersection will now honor her decades of contributions to education, literature, and culture in Chicago. ❤️🙏🏾

Kanye West was in attendance Tuesday as his late mother, Dr. Donda West, was honored with a street dedication on Chicago’s South Side.

The intersection of 78th Street and South Shore Drive will now be dedicated in Dr. West’s name, honoring her decades-long contributions to education, literature and Chicago culture. Chicago rap legends such as GLC, Don C, Really Doe and RhymeFest were also present.

Dr. West served as a professor and chair of the English Department at Chicago State University, where she established the Gwendolyn Brooks Center for Black Literature and Creative Writing. Ye visited the university for MtvU as a surprise stand-in professor back in 2005, among other times.
