If you’re unbothered or mildly bothered by the 1st knee, but outraged by the 2nd, then, in my father’s words, you’re “more devoted to order than to justice.” And more passionate about an anthem that supposedly symbolizes freedom than you are about a Black man’s freedom to live.
Today I am reflecting on the impact of poverty on generations of people here and abroad. I am reminded how money as well as access to high-quality choices are both necessary to move from surviving to thriving. $$$, social networks and focus of intellectual curiosity all matter!
“Sufficient to the day is the evil thereof.” Don’t create troubles before they exist.
When situations appear hopeless, I’m reminded of the importance of taking a step, making observations, setting intentions, then taking another step. This is sometimes what progress looks like.
I can’t help but to wonder: What is our shared vision for being in community with each other today, now that so many of us can choose where and how we live? What does it look like now?
During the 50th year of Dr. MLK, Jr.’s murder, I invite you to join me in considering what it looks like to live for what you believe, instead of dying for it. There is nothing noble about sacrificing well-being for freedom that is already yours. Your presence matters more.
