The Remarkable Comeback of the European Bison in Poland 🇵🇱

Did you know Poland has been a guardian angel for the European Bison? Once facing the brink of extinction, the European Bison has made an extraordinary comeback, largely thanks to Poland's conservation efforts.

📜 Historical Context: In the early 20th century, the last wild European Bison was found dead in Poland's Białowieża Forest. Only 9 bison survived in captivity. A dark period, indeed.

🔬 Conservation Efforts: Enter the International Bison Protection Society, headquartered in Frankfurt but initiated by Polish zoologist Jan Sztolzmana. The organisation aimed to maintain the species through careful breeding.

🌳 Back to Białowieża: By 1929, bison were reintroduced to a specially designated part of the Białowieża Forest, behind a 2-meter high fence. Fast forward to today, and you can find these majestic creatures roaming freely not just in Białowieża but other parts of Poland as well.

🌍 Global Impact: Poland's relentless efforts have not only saved a species but also contributed to biodiversity, capturing global attention and respect.
