My family believes that I witnessed personal papers of fellow Nantucketers blown through the street by the Great Fire of 1846, and because fear of another fire persisted, I did burn my own documents to keep them private. LOL
Here are some interesting facts about me!
1. I was born August 1, 1818 in Nantucket, Massachusetts.
2. I attended Vassar College in New York.
3. I was never married, which means I didn’t have any kids but I was so close with my family throughout my whole life.
In 1848 I became the first woman elected for Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the election to the American Association for the Advancement of Science followed in 1850.
Sone challenges I faced was that I experienced slavery firsthand. I also had to go to school because my dad was the principal of my school. Another problem I faced which was one of the biggest ones was my gender. My father had raised me and my siblings to be a certain way.
Did you know... I was an abolitionist and stopped wearing clothing made of cotton in protest against slavery. Also, after I died I was inducted into the U.S. National Women's Hall of Fame and a World War II liberty ship was named after ME. 💗💗
