Fonterra, used to be NZ Dairy Board before the mega merger, was synonymous to the country itself ie. New Zealand with the brands Anchor and Mainland were practically its pillars. Selling these iconic global brands to a European competitor is practically giving up NZ as a brand.

Fonterra shareholders have decided to sell iconic dairy brands Mainland, Anchor, Kapiti and others to the French firm Lactalis.

This is utter madness. It is economic self-sabotage.

This is an outrageous short-sighted sugar hit that is just giving away New Zealand’s added value to a company from a major EU country.  There is now no long term security for New Zealand’s farmers.

Three years after this deal starts, Lactalis can begin the three year notice to terminate the milk supply to these brands. Six years is meaningless for a long-term exporter. When it’s over, it really is over.

Meanwhile, Lactalis secures ten years of raw milk for its own consumer brands. It is astonishing that business commentators do not see the irony of this.

Where will Miles Hurrell be when that happens? How much are he and the rest of the directors going to make out of this deal?

And why weren't he and his fellow directors transparent and upfront with the New Zealand people from the beginning?
