Ibnul-Jawziyy said, "Know that amongst the most abundant provisions of good deeds is lowering your gaze from Haraam, restraining your tongue from what is not beneficial, observing the rules of Allaah, and giving priority to the orders of Allaah over the inclinations of your nafs"
Allaah, the Exalted, said in the qudsiyy hadeeth:
وَمَا تَقَرَّبَ إلَيَّ عَبْدِي بِشَيْءٍ أَحَبَّ إلَيَّ مِمَّا افْتَرَضْتُهُ عَلَيْهِ
“My slave has not done anything to gain a higher status from Me, in a matter more accepted to Me, than what I have made obligatory upon him…”
Let not your ambitions be a lot of deeds. Rather, let it be the perfection of your deeds, for surely, one would pray and sin while he prays, and one would fast and sin while he fasts.
The best of slaves are those who avoid all the sins.
And to avoid them, you must learn.
One of the pious people used to say,
يا أهلَ المعاصي الخفيةِ، احذروا العقوباتِ الخفيةَ
"O people of hidden sins, beware of the hidden punishments!"
[i.e., beware the punishments that may strike you without you seeing them coming, for those sins you commit in private]
It is makrooh (i.e., there is no reward) to use one's left hand to give charity, to do dhikr, to eat/drink, etc, unless one had an excuse.
Make it a habit to use your RIGHT hand for such matters and teach your kids to do the same.
P.S. The devils eat with their left hand.
Death is the interrupter of pleasures and the terminator of desires.
Most people wait until death comes then they regret and wish to do the good deeds.
It was advised: "Be pious (by fulfilling all the obligations and refraining from all sins) and await death."
The pious people said:
"By the amount of your longing for the dunyaa (worldly life) there escapes your heart the ambition for the Afterlife, and likewise, by the amount of your longing for the Afterlife there escapes your heart ambition for the dunyaa."
Lady ^Aa'ishah, raDiyallaahu ^anhaa, related from the Prophet, Sallallaahu ^alayhi wa sallam, that he said, "The house which the Qur'aan is recited in stands out to the inhabitants of the sky (i.e., the Angels) like the stars stand out to the inhabitants of the earth".
Avoid pride in doing good deeds by knowing that:
Knowledge is an endowment from God,
God is the true Owner of what He gives & takes, &
Everything has an appointed time of existing
So do not pride yourself in a thing you did not create, do not own, & aren't sure about it lasting
An-Nawawiyy said in his book Al-Majmoo^:
"The way to avoid insincerity is to know that the creations do not create benefit or harm."
Let one ponder into the meanings of these words. Allaah is the only One Who creates. The slave only acquires the deed and is accountable for it.
An-Nawawiyy said in Al-Majmoo^:
"The way to avoid envy is to know that Allaah creates everything for a wisdom and that that particular merit that Allaah endowed upon that person has a wisdom behind it, so do not object nor hate that which Allaah has created for a wisdom."
Knowing the Creator is to know He is not like His creation in any way whatsoever. God is not a body and He is not attributed with attributes of bodies. He has no shape nor is He in a place. He is the Creator of places and images.
Know 100%:
Whatever you imagine
God is not like it
@Jacob_Williams0 May Allaah protect you from those who liken Him to His creation. What makes Islam the truth is that we worship the Creator Who doesn't resemble anything, while others worship humans, idols, or something they imagined (anthropomorphists). No one can imagine God. He is not like us.
Thinking about death a lot softens the heart.
The Prophet, Sallallaahu ^alayhi wa sallam, said, "The most intelligent people are those who remember death frequently and those who are most prepared for it".
