Preprint is out! We investigated the genomic diversity and evolutionary history of Anopheles funestus mosquitoes, one of the main species transmitting human malaria across Africa. Here’s a visual summary. Art by @petrathepostdoc . 1/8

We find that the doublesex gene drive target site is highly conserved within our dataset, which bodes well for using the same population suppression gene drive approach in An. funestus as is underway for An. gambiae. 7/8
Our new preprint on species assignment of malaria mosquitoes is out! NNoVAE (for Nearest Neighbours and Variational Autoencoders) uses k-mers on targeted sequences to assign species to all mosquitoes in the Anopheles genus. 1/9
If you want to collaborate with us on ANOSPP and NNoVAE to monitor mosquito populations from your study site or if you would like to contribute sample to increase species representation in our reference database - get in touch with me or @marakat. 8/9
