Adley Rutschman’s trade out of Baltimore hit their clubhouse hard. You can tell just how much he means to those guys:

Adley Rutschman, Colton Cowser, Ryan Mountcastle and Gunnar Henderson were about to see “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” in theaters when the catcher received the call that he had been traded, Cowser said.

They didn’t end up seeing the movie, obviously.

A stunning move for Baltimore.

The Orioles and Red Sox have agreed to terms on a trade that will send star catcher Adley Rutschman to Boston, according to multiple reports.

The 2019 No. 1 overall draft pick and three-time All-Star will join the AL East rivals, who are competing against Baltimore for a playoff spot. He's set to become a free agent after the 2027 season.

The Orioles just had the least Mike Elias draft of the Mike Elias era.

They drafted only three college position players. Only one of them (Ty Head, second round) is from a Division I school.

That tally is the lowest in the Elias era (since 2019) — even lower than 2020’s five-round draft. The Orioles’ 20-round average (since 2021) has been eight college position players, and never fewer than six — until this year.

Even more crazy:

The Orioles drafted eight high school players — using 40% of their picks on them. That ties the Elias-era high with 2019 when there were twice as many rounds. From 2021-2025, the Orioles selected an average of only 2.4 high schoolers, and never more than four — until this year.

The last time the Orioles used a higher percentage of their draft picks on high school players was in 2009. That year, then-GM Andy MacPhail used 21 of his 50 selections (42%) on high schoolers.

Maybe this is a coincidence and just an outlier. But this is the first draft since Elias said after the 2025 trade deadline that he and the rest of the front office would take a “hard look in the mirror” amid the Orioles’ slide.

Perhaps this draft was partially a result of that self-assessment.
