PhD criminology student & was teaching @unisouthampton. MA criminology & crim/psych, ex-police, loves a bit of sport & done a bit of travelling in my time
@AudreySuffolk@gmhales This is an interesting point about geographically specific needs & most solutions are devised nationally…which for me means ‘London centric’ dynamics because that’ll cover all your layers of diversity needs so it doesn’t matter if it’s applied in Southwark or Southwold per se
@JSHKT20@DannyShawNews@ukhomeoffice@instituteforgov …structural reform is now the big thing but (IMO) it’s not going to be done the way that would be best suited/served…so the solution of ‘structural reform’ due to current problems will only cause more problems (again IMO)…and will be that day after tomorrow scenario!
@JSHKT20@DannyShawNews@ukhomeoffice@instituteforgov I recall about 5 years ago suggesting to Martin Hewitt (NPCC) that structural reform of policing is needed…his reply was “now is not the right time”…to which I replied “is there ever a right time?” He then added “the political will isn’t there”…yet look where we are now…
@JSHKT20@DannyShawNews@ukhomeoffice@instituteforgov Yep that’s how it all manifests…most problems & issues shift & priorities are usually a game of catch up but by the time you’ve caught up the next lap starts & around it goes…or you’re so far behind it’s a futile attempt to even try or such a mess there’s no way to clear it up
@sherlock_comms@DomAdlerUK Absolutely…so why when politicians especially keep pledging to put X amount of new/extra cops on the streets it is all completely ignored in terms of experience…police officers are not a plug in and play device you programme & automatically becomes 100% proficient!
@DomAdlerUK@sherlock_comms 30k new recruits would cost £75k each per year for the first 3 years to cover training costs etc…so that’s £6.75bn in total before they even get going…15k experienced on top salary in comparison would be £2.2bn over the same period…the maths is simple let alone the rest!
@sherlock_comms The Uplift had I believe circa 275,000 applicants during the 3 years…whittled down by paper sift then dropped further via meeting the competency standards…in the end 46k or so were recruited for a net gain of 20k within the target timescale…for 30k…it’ll take a lot lot more!
@sherlock_comms@rorygeo I’ll standby what I said on another platform a couple of days ago…the police service has become the most coercive institution going and rapidly the most ideological…which doesn’t happen from the bottom up incidentally & looking in from the outside these days it’s easy to see
@gmhales On this point I would also ask how many cases of CCE or CSE are investigated in Cumbria? Then how many people do they have in order to do this 🤷🏻♂️
@apoliticaleye@gmhales The issue with number 3 is that has always been the case for decades now…ever since the Yorkshire Ripper case…one extreme example being boxed & badged as ‘common’ or ‘institutional’ and reviewed for cultural/policy/practice/legal change…some good comes from it…some doesn’t 🤷🏻♂️
@John_J_C_Moss@Hill_Darran@Conservatives@KemiBadenoch …vetting was being skipped & some forces were counting recruits before they’d even set foot in the doors at HQ’s…because austerity under May, Cameron & Osborne decimated things before that…you can’t boom your way out of a bust & expect top quality policing to surface again 🤷🏻♂️
@John_J_C_Moss@Hill_Darran@Conservatives@KemiBadenoch 20k recruited in a very tight 3 year period…with quotas to fill or financial penalties were dished out (The Met got hit hard)…plus deciding to introduce a degree entry system at the same time…it was rushed & poorly implemented…forces panic recruited as a result…
@toniwriter Ooh that dress…you definitely wear it well! Have a great evening and celebrating the promotion that you’re part of with your amazing support
