Aylesbury's Friars Square Centre Manager Andy Margieson said welcoming dogs is more inclusive and makes life easier for owners who don’t want to (or can’t )leave pets home alone. Dog-friendly shops include Caffé Nero, H&M, JD, Metro Bank, O2, Pandora, Superdrug and Waterstones.

Why can’t other shops and shopping centres take the same dog-friendly approach? John Lewis allows all customers, not just those with assistance dogs, to bring their dogs into John Lewis & Partner shops. Come on dog owners - demand more from your local shops and shopping centres!

Top Tip: How to prevent heatstroke in dogs ..... Use a damp towel or sponge to help cool your dog down. Focus on specific areas such as their neck, tummy and inner thighs. (Photo:"Hot dog" by sfllaw)

Once a dog shows signs of heatstroke the damage is often already done to tissues and organs. Prevention really is the best approach. Taking early action to cool your dog down and seeing a vet if they are very unwell are essential to save your dog’s life.

Remember that pavements on very hot days can burn your dog’s footpads, so try to avoid them. Top Tip ... If it’s too painful for you to place the back of your hand on a pavement for seven seconds then it’s too painful for your dog to walk on.
