Following the beating, he lost consciousness and was left unattended for hours as white ambulance crews refused to assist him. He was eventually taken to the hospital by an ambulance designated for Bląck patients. The incident took place in Montgomery, Alabama, in 1961.

At the hospital, Zwerg simply stated, “Segręgation must be stopped. It must be broken down.”

He’s still alive today at the ripe age of 85.

This is exactly the kind of revisionist history that 𝐛𝐢𝐭𝐭𝐞𝐫 𝐥𝐮𝐨𝐬 use to claim ownership of a movement that belonged to ordinary Kenyans.

The 𝐉𝐮𝐧𝐞 𝟐𝟓𝐭𝐡 𝟐𝟎𝟐𝟒 protests were not the property of ODM, UDA, or any political party.

They were driven by millions of frustrated Kenyans from every region, tribe, religion, and political background who united against bad governance, over-taxation, corruption, and arrogance in leadership.

No one denies that ODM supporters participated. They did. Just as supporters of other parties participated. But participation is not ownership.

No political party can claim exclusive credit for a national uprising that cut across all political affiliations.

The real question is this: if ODM was the sole force behind the protests, why did President Ruto move so quickly to accommodate sections of the opposition instead of addressing the demands that brought Kenyans to the streets?

The answer is obvious. Co-option was used to weaken public pressure and protect a failing administration.

The attempt to erase victims of police brutality from previous struggles is wrong.

Every Kenyan life matters, whether lost in 2017, 2023, 2024, or any other year. Commemoration should unite us against injustice, not be weaponized to score political points.

What threatens the country today is not activists, political parties, or young people demanding accountability. It is a government that has repeatedly ignored the cries of hustlers, mama mboga, boda boda riders, workers, students, and unemployed youth.

The struggle has never been about ODM.

It has never been about activists. It has always been about Kenya.

And until there is accountability, justice, and leadership that serves the people instead of itself, the call from millions of Kenyans will remain the same:

Ruto must go.
