@MAAinthesun “You’re under arrest! I heard you insult the President as bad and actively stupid!”
“No, I was talking about one of his underlings!”
“You can’t fool me—you called the guy bad, and actively stupid! You must have been speaking of the President!”
@ashleydzhang For Florence, one day I enjoyed was traversing the recently-opened-to-the-public Vasari Corridor across the Arno, then walking through the Giardino di Boboli, along the old city wall, and up to the Basilica di San Miniato (which has mosaics and an amazing view).
I cannot wait until the White House changes hands and all of you ghouls switch back from "you're a traitor unless you bootlick so hard your tongue goes numb" to "the government asking any questions about my offshore fentanyl casino is vile tyranny and I will throw myself in the San Francisco Bay in protest", like werewolves at the last ray of the setting moon.
@MAAinthesun “Sorry, though, how much student loan debt are you carrying?”
“$178,900”
“Whoa, that makes a lot of the numbers we see look like ants! That’s way up there. What school?”
“University of Northern Iowa…” “UNI?”
“UNI”
@MAAinthesun That does raise the question of who will assume the hereditary title of Sultan and Yang-di Pertuan of the Garden State of New Jersey, The Abode of Dignity.
A useful survey of the (current!) state of public science funding in the US. I'm reminded a bit of the burning of the Great Library at Alexandria in 642 CE. Attacking science for political ends is incredibly stupid
@MAAinthesun My SF rec if the weather's good and y'all are up for it is that it's a great place for scenic walks. The northwest part from Sutro Baths to the Golden Gate Bridge is great for that (and one can throw in a stop at the Legion of Honor art museum as well).
@MAAinthesun Certainly, whatever it was, its goal was ensuring the constitutional transition of power to the president-elect, which happened in due course. I do not claim it's in any way a precedent for something more radical.
@MAAinthesun But that's not exactly what is alleged to have happened in January 2021, in my understanding. Rather, commands were given, allegedly against the will of the president, to clear the capitol and protect DC in the lead-up to the inauguration. Not mere refusal, but action.
MAGA is doing everything they can to make sure no one who cares about progress, technology, discovery or American exceptionalism has a home on the right. We ought to be doing everything we can to make sure those people have a home on the left.
