For Yom HaShoah: My family lived in Montreal for a century without realising it had a memorial to our patriarch, my great-grandfather Mordechai Pinker, together with other victims of the Holocaust from Chelm, Poland. Perhaps fittingly for a Chelmer (Jewish students will understand why), he refused an opportunity to escape to the USSR with his daughter & grandson (my great-uncle Morrie, still alive) because he was afraid there would be no kosher food there.
