@jaredtendler If you won a million dollars every day from the year 1AD (over 2000 years ago), you would still need another thousand years of daily million dollar winnings to reach his 1.1trillion. A million dollars. Every day. For 3000 years would still not be as much as Elon has.
I am excited to announce this year's OAME Leadership virtual event. Dr Rachel Lambert (@mathematize4all) will be sharing her session "Designing Equitable Mathematics from the Margins: UDL Math" with educators across Ontario. Register at: https://t.co/9aaYOPtO8M

I worry that mathematics is too often taught as if it’s bad-tasting medicine that students just have to take, rather than teaching it with the purpose of showing off its beauty and elegance, and feeling joy when engaging in it.
The Ontario curriculum makes a point in describing this as a goal in mathematics learning.
How incredible would it be if we approached the teaching and learning of math like this?

@DHClements Surprised/ not surprised: “Second, the math that children know when they enter kindergarten is the best predictor of graduating high school, and number and arithmetic knowledge at age 7 years predicts socioeconomic status at age 42 (even controlling for all other variables).”

We're not creating mathematicians. We're creating worker bees
People use “foundational knowledge” as an excuse for regressive pedagogies but no one can define it. All knowledge is foundational after you build on it.
@MNmMath Great point! Fill in the blanks doesn't allow for dynamics... doesn't allow for strategic competence or adaptive reasoning or productive disposition!

@JJDLagrange These 5 things all interact. To be good at math means doing these 5 things at once.
Often "practice" focuses simply on procedures... and then we are surprised when we have students who aren't thinking mathematically or who aren't seeing mathematics outside of the classroom
