@SBakerMD it is well known that low LDL is a marker of underlying poor health such as cancer. It doesn't mean that low LDL is bad. It means that cancer can cause low LDL.
@Heimie123@markkaplan20 Wow, this is a lot of false info all in one place. First, your brain makes its own cholesterol and statins don't cross the blood brain barrier. They have no effect on your brain. Though there is some data that shows those on statins have slightly less dementia.
@SamaHoole Only half true. Had nothing to do with statins. But if someone on the internet says you don’t need statins, people get all excited and tell their friends. 100’s of good studies prove statins can slow/stop artery blockage. Read those vs passing this around
@holmanm As for Big Pharma pushing statins, that is a silly argument. They have been off patent for 10 – 20 years so 90% of all statins are generic, and their costs are near zero. Because of this, statins are made by “Small Pharma”. The biggest producer, Teva, reported a loss last year.
@holmanm If you measure the LDL of fit young people it is nice and low. And if you get the LDL of older folks down, their artery plaque stops building up and in some studies starts to slowly reverse.
@holmanm Sure there is a U shaped curve with very low levels of LDL showing a higher death rate but that is due to very sick people (e.g. those with cancer) have low LDL. Once you normalize for this, the U shape goes away
@holmanm While all that sounds impressive, that fact is heart attack and stroke are the leading cause of death around the world. And over 100 studies show that the greater the LDL level, the greater the chance of death.
