This piece by @mrianleslie is great on friendship, but I would add a caveat on meeting up with people you haven’t seen for 40 years.
I too highly recommend it, but my experience is that you drink at the rate you did when you met. Which has consequences.
For the runners out there:
New VP candidate Tim Walz is a runner. And not too shabby.
Looks like he's run:
6:17 road mile at 52 years old.
21:43- 5k at 49
1:47 half marathon at 51
'Sacrifice' is an over-used word in high-performance sport. Being able to dedicate one's life to sport is a privilege. It is usually others who make the sacrifice.
It goes without saying it was an incredible race, but this level of detail tells its own story. That 1:51 at 800m was off a relatively slow first 100m (Jakob accelerated at 75m). Cole Hocker was 0.5 slower than Jacob and 0.4 slower than Josh. Fine margins.
Here's the splits for that 1,500m...absolutely insane...
1:51.5 through 800...
Look at that last 300... 13.3, 13.3, 13.0...That's 39.6 off a HARD pace for Cole Hocker.
USA 1-3-5 is nuts.
Nothing Jakob could do on this one. The other guys were better today.
Incredibly impressed with Keely Hodgkinson's win in the 800m last night. The pressure must have been incredible and she looked very nervous before both the semi and the final (not surprisingly). Handling that is what makes her special.
Every flippin time. Pundits gabbling on about lactate and lactic acid and trying to ‘science up’ their commentary… not just with clichés but constantly getting the wrong end of the stick.. do better @clarebalding@MarkFosterSwim @beckaddlington
Reassuring that I wasn't alone in thinking this although it doesn't make up for the fact that it was "atrocious". Also had to move from Discovery/Eurosport to BBC because of Carlton.
Atrocious TV direction of the men’s time trial. This is the Olympics, not the Tour de France — we don’t need helicopter shots of churches, bridges etc when the race is reaching its climax.
Looking forward to this. There’s something remarkable about seeing a load of very talented athletes -including a load of international athletes - rock up at a small (but perfectly formed) venue in south London.
It’s nearly with us! Meeting timetable & start lists are now up on @BritishMilers website - Wednesday 24th July @TootingBecTrack world class middle distance races & more, free to watch 😊
I don't agree with this:
"It is typically British to be pessimistic about things that you love. So it isn’t a surprise that many Londoners think that London is beyond saving."
But there are a few good ideas like "noise cameras".
