@W96Emily I live in a suburb too and it’s not just an alternative to a dense urban environment. Some suburbs are varied and dynamic and others are not. I think the generic criticism here is that many places are too prescriptive and this rigidity isn’t healthy. Not that SFH is problematic.

@W96Emily They’re both correct because they’re focusing on different things. Everyone having their own personal castle is great, but so is a tapestry of styles and uses where fewer people have their preferences subordinated to the rigid prescriptions of zoning and other codes.

@ZaidJilani This is the wrong rabbit hole. The fact that our consumer goods are made elsewhere is great for us. Comparative advantage working for both sides. The fact that we can’t easily build new housing or manufacturing plants is definitely a problem.

I feel like “virtue signalling” is one of those terms like “woke” that is initially useful in describing an actual phenomena, but eventually becomes co-opted by sociopaths to describe any compassionate or prosocial behaviour

@W96Emily If Trump, as part of a private consortium and without public subsidy, wanted to pay enough money to convince Gazans to leave and build better lives elsewhere that could be a huge win all-around. Done voluntarily, it’s an attractive - if implausible -idea.

@W96Emily Some of these folks have facilitated the emergence of true bigots and while perhaps it’s not their direct intention, it’s something that’s fair to hold them accountable for.

@W96Emily Without making a blanket statement, some of the movement is simply extreme team politics. Owning libs, utilizing a new weapon for old battles, etc. Related to this is the folks who felt betrayed for one reason or another and go all out for scalps on behalf of new tribe.
