Movies like this underperform all the time and we’ll never truly know why. But I do think it’s possible that this movie didn’t get the full weight of marketing and PR put behind it due to the controversy. Maybe it’s wishful thinking, but it’s possible.
What makes A24 so great is their consistent ability to get their movies released on so many screens despite many of them underperforming. They either have GREAT relationships with exhibitors or they know a few secrets. Either way, it’s a great way for smaller films to be seen
@JoeSaysStuff@bob_noss@SilentDawnLB Probably for future audiences. People that didn’t go see a movie, or did, seeing that it’ll hit VOD in less than a month are less likely to go see the next release in theaters

It looks like this series is being made for the target audience of the books, teenagers, and not the 25+ year olds that grew up with the book. That’s amazing.
We’ve been quiet for a while, but we’re not gone. Some of the ideas for growth that we’ve had don’t match up perfectly with how we do things, and it’s gonna take a little rebranding and a little “righting the ship.” But your favorite movie marketing podcast (lmao) will continue.

The release has been questionable but it seems like they released it so quickly to build on the organic hype from Sundance. No movie from that festival got talked about more, and if you’re allocating budgets, it makes sense to try to utilize the buzz the film has already built.
baffling that A24 simultaneously released AFTER YANG on Showtime alongside theatrical with zero fanfare; figuring out how/when/where to see films shouldn’t be this convoluted
