Just let them know you are there for them if they need and try to check them once and a while to let them know you care. It's not about you. Don't push people over their limit if they're overwhelmed

Serious advice: before accepting a PhD position, discuss face to face or by phone--not email--with people who have been supervised by your future supervisor.
Believe it or not, some supervisors are bad. Like really, really bad.
