It is beyond offensive that the first firearms legislation that the Tennessee Senate has passed in the wake of the Covenant School tragedy is a bill to protect gun manufacturers from civil liability.
Just going to repost these videos from the protest that happened the day the 3 of us walked to the well from my desk. Don’t believe the lies about violence that day. As the TN Highway Patrol said, there were no incidents, arrests, or damage.
More proof the pressure is having an impact — Check this out:
LAST YEAR: Tennessee House Republicans killed @vincentdixie54’s bill to tell 18yo students they can register to vote.
YESTERDAY: Same exact bill from @RepMcKenzie passes committee with no resistance👇🏽
A thread for those wondering how #MetroCouncil can fill the vacancy for state house D52, in the wake of @brotherjones_ expulsion. The council has very specific procedures for filling a vacancy in elected office. They’re captured in Rule 49 of the Council Rules of Procedure.
🚨🚨🚨 - CALL TO ACTION! After yesterday’s events that were a complete distraction, now more than ever we are asking fellow legislators to make productive use of the final weeks of session and move forward on common sense gun policies. 🧵
Back to the task at hand! On behalf of the Davidson Co. Delegation, honored to be given thousands of signatures from @mnpsnashville students asking for common sense gun reforms. Thank you to our student board member, Abenezer Hailie for hand delivering these to us.
“Listen, all you have to do is pass a bill that we won’t calendar or ever think about. You just need to pass a bill on an issue that we won’t let you talk about during personal orders. Why aren’t you white and powerful like me?”
BREAKING: Vice President Kamala Harris is about to make a surprise visit to Nashville to meet with Justin Pearson, Justin Jones and Gloria Johnson, the three democrats expelled from the Tennessee House.
Harris will also heavily push for gun control.
Harris’ visit continues to show that this move by the GOP will backfire massively.
The Republican Party today made it clear as day that a peaceful Black man with a megaphone is more threatening to them than a thousand violent white men with deadly weapons.
What happened in Tennessee is the latest example of a broader erosion of civility and democratic norms. Silencing those who disagree with us is a sign of weakness, not strength, and it won’t lead to progress.
"It might have to do with the color of our skin," Rep. Gloria Johnson said after being asked why she survived the House expulsion vote, while her colleague Justin Jones did not. @courtneynallen
Today's GOP-led vote in the TN House disenfranchised nearly 150,000 voters whose representatives rightfully pushed to reform TN’s insanely dangerous gun laws after the horrific mass murder at The Covenant School last week. What a historically sad day for democracy in Tennessee.
