This evening was the public vigil for Caroline Huebner-Makurat, an old friend who was tragically shot and killed just over a week ago in Toronto. She was hit by a stray bullet in broad daylight, caught in the crossfire of what appears to have been a drug-related gun battle. Following the vigil, her husband Adrian (an even closer old friend—we organized Polish Boy Scout (Harcerskie) camps together) unexpectedly took the microphone just before people dispersed to say a few powerful words. He reiterated to all of us what he told me when I called him when I learned of Caroline's passing: What you can do for me is reach out to people you care about and tell them what they mean to you, as life can be fleeting.

What a beautiful message, shared at at time of such personal distress! I'm really touched how Adrian chose use this time of great pain to motivate us all to strengthen our relationships with those we care about—exactly as Caroline, with her ever-positive and gregarious personality, would have wanted. I understood that what I choose to make of this terrible situation means a lot more than the fact I hadn't seen either Caroline or Adrian in years. I'm choosing to take Adrian's counsel seriously—all this has caused me to reflect on the relationships I have with others that I value—and will be reaching out. By all means, do the same.

RIP Caroline, you are so, so missed.
