Please permit us to share with you and your followers afew open secrets on Value Added Tax (VAT).

1. VAT is a consumption tax, that is ultimately paid by the consumer.

2. VAT has a component of input and out put, as the various players along the VAT chain do business. So the importer that you mention in your tweet, pays VAT at importation that is his input VAT. When he sells to the wholesalers, he earns output VAT which offsets the input VAT.

The wholesaler and retailer also do the same.

The consumer is the one who inccurs the VAT because he cant offset against anything.

EFRIS is here to help URA ensure that there is transactional visibility across the entire VAT chain.

We have had instances where the final consumer pays the VAT to anyone of the people along the value chain who have instead eaten the VAT instead of remitting it to URA.

EFRIS is here to stop the illegal eating of VAT.
