I spent weeks on a story about the Chesapeake's ospreys going hungry, and it kept leading back to the same small fish.
Menhaden are the ospreys' primary food. They also feed the striped bass, drum and other fish that anglers catch and families eat. It's one chain, and this year the birds at the end of it had the worst breeding season researchers have ever documented in the saltwaters of the Chesapeake.
I've seen striped bass fishing decline in western Long Island Sound in recent years, and I wanted answers. I'm grateful to the editors at The Washington Post for giving me the platform to go find them, and to everyone who has read it. Here it is...#osprey #menhaden #stripedbass #birds

Biologists have recorded the worst osprey breeding season they have ever documented in the Chesapeake Bay.

Commercial harvesting and changing water conditions may explain the disappearance of a fish called menhaden, which is ospreys' principal prey. https://t.co/UbSwUc2Llk

However bad the handling the count has been, the Iowa’s Democratic Party’s handling of the messaging around it has been an abject disaster.
It should be taught in classrooms as an example of what not to do in a crisis.
