Speaking with ‘People’ on 18 June, Jane Schoenbrun reflected on their upcoming film ‘Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma’ and the challenges queer filmmakers still face within the industry.
While Schoenbrun has built a career telling stories rooted in their own experiences, they argued that queer creators are too often treated as a niche category rather than simply being recognised as filmmakers.
“Christopher Nolan gets to be a filmmaker. I have to be a queer filmmaker,” they said, “I think that points to an idea that queer stories are something that should exist on the margins or that aren't as commercial as normal or regular stories.”
Schoenbrun expressed hope that Hollywood will create more space for original queer voices, saying, “I cannot untangle my queerness and my decision to be out as trans from the way I want to live my life, from my belief in there being the possibility of other better worlds that we can all build together. It would be amazing if that was the place that our commercial film industry was trying to make art from.”
