Let’s talk about CLOUD SEEDING and FLOODING. Lots of conspiracies floating around, which is especially disappointing in the aftermath of a disaster that killed 109 people.

This is the deadliest thunderstorm-driven U.S. flash flood since July 31, 1976, when 144 people were killed in Big Thompson Canyon in Colorado.

Does cloud seeding exist? Yes. Does it have anything to do with floods? Nope.

Are we sure? Yes. Are we going to get misinformed folks chiming in in the comments with outlandish conspiracies that defy basic physics and Earth sciences? Also yes.

Cloud seeding is the process by which researchers inject aerosols (usually silver iodide) into the atmosphere in minute concentrations. (Interestingly, ground-up table salt may soon be used, and the concept is showing more promise.)

The idea is that sometimes raindrops need a bit of extra “help” forming. If you look in the sky right now, odds are you see plenty of clouds — but most clouds don’t produce rain. Clouds are made of moisture, but most of the time that moisture doesn’t fall. That’s because cloud droplets are small and light and can float.

The point of cloud seeding is to “seed” the clouds, or release small condensation nuclei that moisture can condense onto. Cloud droplets coalesce into bigger droplets and eventually raindrops that are heavy enough to fall.

This process theoretically leads to a bit more precipitation falling, BUT the jury is still out on whether it’s worth it. Cloud seeding DOESN’T work when it’s already going to rain, because the atmosphere doesn’t “need” the help. And if it’s not going to rain, there’s not much moisture to work with anyway. You need a very special set of marginal conditions in a dry environment to get any meaningful output. Otherwise, there tends to be only a 7 to 10 percent effectiveness.

Cloud seeding DOES NOT cause floods. If there’s enough moisture to cause a flood, it’s already raining.

It’s like wringing the water out of a sponge. That’s not going to flood your apartment. If your apartment is already flooding, that has nothing to do with the sponge in your sink.

What happened in Texas is the result of tropical moisture stemming from the remnants of Barry, which made landfall in Tamaulipas, Mexico on June 30. That set the stage of downpours. Small-scale perturbations in the atmosphere, like converging breezes left behind by earlier thunderstorms, did the trick.

With 100% relative humidity, it was already raining – a LOT. You can’t create a 50,000 foot thunderstorm by seeding the clouds get marginally more moisture out of them; that’s just a silly thought.

Four TRILLION gallons of rain fell from just two of the downpours. Cloud seeding exists in marginal environments on a spatial scale of a couple miles. And cloud seeding did not occur in the days leading up to the Texas floods.

Alleging cloud seeding played a role in the floods is as ludicrous as saying “Matthew drove his car around a traffic circle, which caused a tornado.”

You’re going to hear a LOT of uneducated people chiming in on social media – including some in political office or positions of power. Tune out the noise and ask yourselves “do these people have a background in atmospheric physics?” If the answer is “no,” then they’re probably not qualified to peddle conspiracy theories.
