On the set of Lincoln, even Steven Spielberg had to call Daniel Day-Lewis "Mr. President." For three months. Day-Lewis never broke character. He'd read more than 100 books about Lincoln in the year before filming. He refused to hear an English accent on set, in case it corrupted his.

He won the Oscar. His third Best Actor trophy. In nearly 100 years of the award, no one else has won it more than twice. Nine other actors share the runner-up spot, including Brando, Nicholson, Hanks, and Hopkins.

Day-Lewis has acted in roughly 20 films across a 54-year career. That's one film every 2.7 years. Tom Hanks averages roughly one a year. Day-Lewis has been nominated for Best Actor six times since 1989. He won three of those.

During My Left Foot (1989) he stayed in a wheelchair the entire shoot. He made the crew feed him because his character had cerebral palsy. To prepare for The Last of the Mohicans (1992) he lived off the land for six months, learned to skin animals, and carried a 12-pound antique rifle everywhere, including to Christmas dinner. Before filming In the Name of the Father (1993) he locked himself in a prison cell for three days without food or water, lost 50 pounds, and asked the crew to throw cold water on him and shout abuse at him on rotation.

On Gangs of New York (2002) he trained as an apprentice butcher, sharpened knives between takes, refused a modern coat in winter, caught pneumonia, then refused modern medicine. While shooting There Will Be Blood (2007), his costar Kel O'Neill quit halfway through filming because Day-Lewis kept intimidating him between takes. Paul Dano replaced him. For Phantom Thread (2017) he learned to design and sew dresses from scratch.

Between The Boxer and Gangs of New York he didn't act for five years. He moved to Florence and trained as a shoemaker. He came back only because Scorsese asked.

He retired in 2017 and said it was permanent. He came back in 2025 for Anemone, directed by his son Ronan, which the two co-wrote. At 69 he's told Empire magazine he won't rule out more films. Scorsese has been asking for a third collaboration since January 2024. They've made two together, Age of Innocence and Gangs of New York, with the second earning Day-Lewis a Best Actor nomination. A third would put him in line for a fourth Best Actor Oscar. No one has ever won four.

Twenty films across 54 years. Six nominations, three wins, and one record nobody in 97 years of Oscars has matched.
