CURASSOW | Walked out from camp chasing jungle birds. After hearing a male Curassow ahead, we slowly closed the distance. He finally sat in a tree within range โ one shot and the he was down. You never know what youโll find in the jungle.
GREY BROCKET DEER | Ground setup near fresh scrapes. Just before dark, Chepon whispered โbrocket.โ He was 8 yards away. As I stood from the hammock, he bolted. I squeezed off a shot, and we followed blood about 75 yards to him bedded. Quick follow-up and a grey brocket was down.

RED BROCKET DEER | Just before mid-morning, my guide spotted movement โ brocket legs in the thick jungle. I got my binos up and saw the bigger buck from the cameras. He stepped clear, I took the shot, and a quick follow-up. Red Brocket down. A beautiful buck after a long wait.

Up before daylight, coffee and gear, then a dark walk in. Caught a set of brocket eyes on the way. Settled into the machan hammock as the jungle slowly came alive and waited for first light.
First hunt of the year in the Yucatรกn chasing red brocket for my North American Deer Slam. Third trip after an unsuccessful grey brocket hunt. Long days in jungle hammocks ahead โ hoping to finally see one up close.
BUKHARAN MARKHOR | An hour on horseback and 90 minutes of side-hilling, we found him bedded deep in a ravine. Hours later, two more appearedโone a heavy, mature giant. At 595yds I settled in, squeezed, and the shot was perfect. His coloring, his horns, the country: unforgettable.

๐ง๐ช๐๐ก๐ง๐ฌ-๐๐๐๐๐ง | The group from the skyline came down and headed our direction; the other bulls joined with the big bull in the back. As luck would have it, the group went 100 yards away, but the big bull who stood on the backside of the hill was out of sight. We waited for the group to pass us, then hurried behind them.
We finally got into an elevated position, stacking two backpacks so I could get high enough. The bull stood at 225 yards. I settled in, steadied and squeezed my @gunwerks.
The bull took the hitโฆ and went down.
Walking up to him, knowing this was my third trip, after so many setbacks, and finally being in the right place at the right time โ Iโll admit, I got emotional.
This was a big Barren Ground bull.
And even more than thatโฆ it was No. 28 of my Super Slam.

We hit the road at 6 a.m., heading toward the final destination of a busy trip. Our quarry this time was a Water Buffalo, and the journey took us down to the southwest corner of the Orange Free State.
Along the way, we met up with the local PHs and pressed on together. By 9:30 a.m., we reached the hunting grounds and set out immediately. It didnโt take long before Buffalo began to appearโfeeding out of the tall grasses and drifting onto the freshly cut agricultural fields. Those fields held patches of standing water, making it a perfect draw for Water Buffalo.
After about an hour of glassing, we picked up a big bull in a group of four. We dropped off the truck, got the wind in our favor, and began a careful stalk. At 150 yards, I settled onto the sticks and took the first shot. The bullet landed perfectly, just behind the shoulder. As the bull spun and ran, I put two more into him. On the third shot, he crashed to the ground.
A massive, old Water Buffalo bull lay before us.
This marked the third country where Iโve hunted Water Buffaloโfollowing earlier adventures in Argentina and Australia.

Finally making it to the rocky area, we quickly spotted a big boar feeding in the grass. The wind was perfect, giving us the chance to slip in for a stalk. We eased our way to about 100 yards and got set up. The boar kept feeding toward us until he closed the distance to just 30 yards. When he finally quartered enough, I placed the shot right in his shoulderโand he dropped on the spot.
It was a massive boar. Just like the wild hogs that have exploded across the southern U.S., these boars have spread rapidly in South Africa too.

We had shifted our focus to a couple of introduced species in South Africaโthe Golden Oryx, which weโd been seeing often while glassing the plains, and the Wild Boar. Our PH mentioned a thicker, rocky area where he had spotted quite a few boars recently, so that was where we planned to head.
On the way, we glassed a large group of Gemsbok and Golden Oryx. Two big Oryx in particular looked like solid targets. By now, the wind was really humming. Our first stalk brought us to just over 250 yards, but the gusts had me bouncing all over the sticks. We tried to edge in closer, but the herd moved over the hill and out of sight.
Over the next couple of hours, we made several failed stalks. At one point, I tried setting up prone with my bipod, but the tall grass made it nearly impossible. Finally, I managed to get in positionโonly for the group to keep moving, eventually slipping away over the next hill.
At last, the herd hesitated just long enough for us to close the gap to 300 yards. I was back on the sticks, still battling the wind. I steadied as best I could and let a shot fly, followed quickly by a second. The Golden Oryx was down. It was tricky in the wind for sure.
The Golden Oryx is a striking animalโlarge-bodied, with a rich golden coat, long sweeping horns, and a bold, patterned face. We took time for photos, then worked together to load him up. It was a team effort, and a rewarding end to a challenging hunt.
