We were never beating Spain, let's be realistic. It was always going to be silver or bronze. We'd have struggled to keep the ball against them even more than Argentina did.

People point to the France game, but they only really turned it on in the second half of what was basically a friendly, and we still nearly threw away a 4-0 lead. Tuchel deserves criticism for the Argentina semi-final, but saying he cost us the World Cup is a stretch.

Yamal had a great season, but individually his World Cup wasn’t anything special. It’ll be close, but Kane’s overall season has been on another level and I think that’s what gets him over the line.

Farming plumbers yet he put 2 goals and 2 assists past Mbappé's team to knock them out of the Champions League, then beat his national team to finish 3rd, ended the season with 73 goals (2nd most ever behind Messi), scored in every Champions League knockout round, hit a hat-trick in the DFB-Pokal final and won 3 trophies.

But apparently none of that counts because it happened in Germany.

The Ballon d'Or is heavily influenced by the biggest tournaments, and players who aren't there usually end up being forgotten in the conversation, no matter how good their club season was.

I mean, Kane literally saved England from going out early. He scored two late goals against DR Congo to drag England into the next round, then followed it up with the winner against Mexico.

You can say Jude had the better tournament overall, but saying Kane didn't have a single standout performance just isn't true.

@j4mil0 @amitttrmfc2 Kane literally finished higher than Mbappé at the World Cup, so I'm not sure about that. He also scored two crucial late goals to keep England alive in the tournament and got the winner against Mexico. If it's an individual award, those moments count just as much as Mbappé's.

Yeah, Bellingham was better for England, but Kane still has the stronger Ballon d'Or case.

He scored 61 club goals, found the net in every knockout Champions League tie (with at least two goals across each tie), and capped the season off with a hat-trick in the DFB-Pokal final.

That's an all-time great club campaign on top of another great year for England.
