I don't just love that Iowa State @CycloneMBB team completely blew out Purdue @BoilerBall. What was incredible was the poise they played with at Mackey.
Players in Otz's systems are taught discipline and respect. TJ also models it with surgical intentionality. He doesn’t just coach a basketball team. It's almost like the guy runs a human development lab disguised with a sport. The basketball piece is simply the daily arena where that character gets tested.
I mean compare their emotional governance as a unit to any other program out there. His guys definitely aren’t robots bc trust me they definitely feel the emotions of the game, but they learn to own their emotions instead of letting their emotions own them. That’s why they could be up by 20 or down by 20, and they look and act the same exact way.
I mean look at what they DO NOT DO in responding to mistakes or calls that don't go their way: no arm-waving, no blaming, no reactions, just at the most a quick acknowledgment and a reset to the next play.
Most teams ride emotional waves, and there are some very stormy nights in men's college hoops these days. When shots fall, they’re loud and loose; when adversity hits, the body language caves. Otz's entire model is different. It doesn't matter who you are and where you came from, you earn the right to play by being the same person in every circumstance. That steadiness suffocates opponents. A team that won’t crack, sag, or celebrate too early forces the other side to beat them possession by possession, with no help from their own meltdown.
If there is one emotion they show - it is happiness bc it is so evident how much fun they are having out there as a group when the smiles come out. The real masterpiece is a locker room full of young men who have learned how to carry themselves the same way in every storm: head up, eyes clear, heart steady. That’s what it means to build a system that raises elite human beings.
