The truth is, we didn’t arrive at this global imbalance overnight.

For decades even centuries nations have built systems that reward growth but ignore humanity.

We created progress without inclusion. Wealth without dignity. Borders without empathy.

The poor didn’t choose suffering.
The world created it through:
- extractive economies that drained entire regions
- wars fought far from the countries that funded them
- development models that favored the strong
- globalization that lifted some while erasing others
- comfort that made the privileged forget the invisible

Migration is not a crisis
it’s the consequence of a deeper crisis we refused to acknowledge.

The poor are not crying because they are weak.
They are crying because the world built on progress has repeatedly left them outside the gates.

And the greatest tragedy is this:
leaders want peace, but they ignore justice and justice is the foundation peace stands on.

We got here because we chased prosperity faster than we built compassion.

If humanity wants a different future, leaders must finally understand:

There is no peace where millions are unseen.
There is no progress if it leaves people behind.
The cry of the poor is not a burden it is the compass.

Now that Biden is leaving office, I can give a full review of the evidence on the border crisis thanks to some new data. The prevailing narrative is wrong. Biden didn’t cut enforcement. Biden increased it. Biden Didn’t Cause the Border Crisis: The Definitive Case.

@GregTSargent As a person very close to the dynamics on the ground and at the policy level pdomestically and hemispherically, I can confidently declare that @GregTSargent and @David_J_Bier have a far more nuanced and accurate assessment of this debate than @DLeonhardt.

David starts this out with an immediate and flagrant distortion. I don't think any of us argue that the administration *didn't loosen policy in any way.* Of course it did.

The argument, rather, is that Biden loosened in some areas and tightened in many others. That the loosening was in response to terrible humanitarian outcomes produced by things like MPP, excluding unaccompanied migrant kids, and deporting longtime residents. That David should level with readers about the difficult nature of those particular dilemmas, rather than oversimplifying them, and should say forthrightly whether in his view Biden should/shouldn't have kept Trump policies that were producing those terrible outcomes. That the tightening Biden did do was meaningful, extensive, and predated 2024, even if that coexisted with some loosening. And that David's ideological leanings render him unwilling to seriously grapple with all of these facts.

Indeed, a serious reckoning with the Biden legacy should require a real effort to grasp his actual overall approach, which was/is to shift incentives away from asylum-seeking at the border, and toward employing broadened and more orderly legal pathways from abroad, i.e. the CNVH parole programs and CBP One app.

David tends to miss the significance of these latter innovations because he only views them through a frame of "is it tighter, or looser?" As a result, he sometimes lumps things like parole into the "looser, therefore bad" category, when in fact, it is an effort to *disincentivize* the very sort of border-overwhelming migration that he decries, and it has actually had some success at this (not sure he's ever acknowledged that).

I'm not really a defender of the Biden administration. I think they erred in all kinds of ways. But that effort at a paradigm shift deserves more serious discussion. @nytpolitics should report more seriously on it. The current coverage does not inform readers adequately about it.

It's an easy, winning argument:

Border crossings are lower today than when Trump left office.

As VP, Harris was put in charge of reducing migration from Central America. Within 2 years, it declined 50%.

Harris supported the bipartisan border security bill. Trump killed it.
