Lee Kuan Yew proved that a nation's destiny is engineered, not inherited.
In 1965, when Singapore was unceremoniously booted out of Malaysia, the international consensus predicted absolute state failure.
He inherited a swampy, impoverished island with a population of just two million people living in squalor.
It had zero natural resources, no agricultural land, no military defense, and lacked even enough basic drinking water to sustain human life.
If Lee Kuan Yew had operated on the standard of modern populist politics, he would have spent the next thirty years weeping on international stages, blamed historical external factors, and begged neighboring countries for permanent welfare handouts. He didn't. He went to work.
While post-colonial leaders across Africa and Asia turned inward to launch economically illiterate isolationist experiments, Lee championed hyper-globalization.
He realized that if you have no domestic market, your only asset is human capital. He cleared the malarial swamps of Jurong, instituted strict pro-market property rights, lowered taxes, and laid down red carpets for Western multinationals like Texas Instruments and Hewlett Packard before the supporting infrastructure even existed.
His domestic masterclass was built on structural logic, not ideological fantasies.
He gave his anti-corruption units actual teeth, starting with his own cabinet. If a politician stole public funds, they didn't get a promotion or a diplomatic posting, they went straight to prison. Zero tolerance meant global investors knew their capital was safer in Singapore than in London or New York.
He transformed subjects into stakeholders through the Central Provident Fund and the Housing Development Board. By aggressively shifting 75% of the population out of slums into state-of-the-art public housing, he gave ordinary citizens a physical, equity-based ownership stake in the country's survival.
He instituted mandatory bilingualism and made English the main national language to plug his workforce directly into the global grid.
He hired elite technocrats based on raw competence, completely ignoring ethnic divisions.
Teachers were paid corporate-level salaries because he understood that a first-world economy cannot be built by an uneducated majority.
In a single compressed generation, GDP per capita skyrocketed from under $500 to overtaking the United States and the United Kingdom.
The structural lesson of Singapore is a devastating indictment of Africa's current leadership.
It proves that poverty is not a permanent geographical curse; it is a choice made by incompetent elites who prefer primitive capital accumulation over national engineering.
Clarification
As we are aware, the Chairman of the Patriotic League of Uganda, Gen. @mkainerugaba, appointed Regional Vice Chairpersons for the Western, Northern, and Central regions.
The appointed Regional Vice Chairpersons are:
Hon. Balaam Barugahara Ateenyi (Western Region).
Hon. Lilian Aber (Northern Region).
Hon. Kiryowa Kiwanuka ( Central Region).
By virtue of their appointments as Regional Vice Chairpersons, these officers automatically serve as the Regional Coordinators for their respective regions.
This is to clarify that regional coordination falls exclusively within the mandate of the appointed Regional Vice Chairpersons. No other person should claim or present themselves as a Regional Coordinator.

Why does the Mulwanda road matter so much?
As Hon. Maganda observed, the Kenyan government has already completed its road up to the border river at Mulwanda. What remains is Ugandaโs 12-kilometre stretch from Lumino, which is still unpaved.
The Minister put it plainly to the Ministry of Works engineers who were present: our people are not asking for very expensive things. They are asking for a road. If tarmac cannot come immediately, we start with murram so that vehicles can begin moving.
Once open, this route will divert heavy commercial trucks away from Busia town. That means less congestion at the border, fewer accidents and more trade.
We were joined by the Governor of Busia County in Kenya, Dr. Paul Otuoma, who reminded us that a fully operational Mulwanda crossing would fulfil a dream elders on both sides have held for over a century. He also pointed to the Memorandum of Understanding signed under UN-Habitat to create the Larger Busia Metropolis, and to the extension of the Naivasha railway to Uganda.
Governor Otuoma urged the Ugandan government to complete the link, noting that Uganda is their largest trading partner in this region. I thank him for standing with us. Our part must now be done.
THE TRADE LINK UGANDA AND KENYA DESERVE!
Yesterday, I had the honour of joining the people of Samia Bugwe South as Chief Guest at the thanksgiving ceremony of Hon. Julius Wandera Maganda, held at Butenge Primary School in Lunyo, Busia District.
In my address, I took keen interest in the long standing call by our elders, including Justice James Ogoola, who have been asking for the construction of the 12-kilometre stretch at Mulwanda. Their request is a fair one.
I therefore took the opportunity to direct the Ministry of Works and Transport to work on this road immediately, to ease the movement of our people.
The road will run through Lumino Sub-County and open a third border connection between Uganda and Kenya. It will decongest the heavily used Busia and Malaba crossings and give our traders a faster, cheaper route for cross-border business.
As leaders from the same region, Hon. Maganda and I understand the aspirations of our people. Our communities continue to raise concerns about the condition of roads, railway development and other infrastructure needs that affect their daily lives.
Those concerns deserve action. The Mulwanda road is a practical place to begin, and I look forward to seeing the Ministry of Works and Transport move quickly so that our people can feel the difference.
What has Speaker @ObothOboth been up to this weekend?
OBOTH URGES IMMEDIATE CONTRUCTION OF UGANDA โ KENYA BORDER ROAD
LUNYO, BUSIA โ The Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Jacob Marksons Oboth, has directed the Ministry of Works and Transport to construct a road at Mulwanda, opening a third border connection between Uganda and Kenya.
The 12- kilometer road, which will run through Lumino Sub-County in Busia District, is billed to decongest the heavily used Busia and Malaba crossings and provide a faster, cheaper route for cross-border trade between Uganda and Kenya.
"I have heard elders, including Justice James Ogoola, asking for the construction of the 12-kilometre stretch at Mulwanda. I want to take this opportunity to direct the Ministry of Works to work on this road immediately to ease the movement of our people," Speaker Oboth order.
He issued the directive on Saturday, October 10, 2026, as Chief Guest at the thanksgiving ceremony of Hon. Julius Wandera Maganda at Butenge Primary School in Lunyo, Busia District.
The ceremony celebrated Hon. Maganda's re-election as Member of Parliament for Samia Bugwe South and his appointment as Minister of State for Works and Transport.
"As leaders from the same region, Honourable Maganda and I understand the aspirations of our people. Our communities continue to raise concerns about the condition of roads, railway development and other infrastructure needs that affect their daily lives," the Speaker said.
Then he counselled: โThe appointment of one of our own to this important Ministry naturally raises expectations. Honourable Maganda, I encourage you to ensure that the concerns of our region are brought to the attention of Government and that our priority infrastructure needs receive due consideration within national plans and available resources."
The Speaker, however, cautioned, that the Minister's duty goes beyond the region.
"While serving our region, we must also remember that your responsibility extends to the entire country. In Parliament, we shall continue to play our respective roles in legislation, budgeting and oversight to support infrastructure development and service delivery across Uganda," he said.
In his remarks, Minister Maganda acknowledge the enormous responsibility on his shoulders and appealed to his own Ministry of Works engineers present at the event to act quickly.
He observed the Kenyan government had already completed its road up to the border river at Mulwanda, leaving only Uganda's 12-kilometre stretch from Lumino unpaved.
"The people are not asking for very expensive things. We are asking for a road, and if you do not have a tarmac road immediately, start with a murram road so that vehicles can start moving," he said.
He revealed the road would divert heavy commercial trucks away from Busia town, easing congestion at the border, reducing accidents and boosting trade.
The Governor of Busia County in Kenya, Dr. Paul Otuoma, said a fully operational Mulwanda crossing would fulfil a dream that elders on both sides have held for over a century.
Governor Otuoma saluted the joint efforts of Kenya President Dr. William Ruto and his Ugandan counterpart Gen Yoweri Museveni on improving cross border trade between the two countries.
He cited the Memorandum of Understanding signed under UN-Habitat to create the Larger Busia Metropolis and the extension of the Naivasha railway to Uganda.
โWe urge the Ugandan government to complete the link, because Uganda is our largest trading partner in this region,โ he said.
Speaker Oboth congratulated the Minister on what he called two important milestones.
"Your re-election reflects the trust the people have placed in you, while your appointment by His Excellency the President gives you an opportunity to contribute further to our country's development," he said.
Oboth further asked the people of Samia Bugwe South and Busia District to keep supporting their leaders while holding them accountable.
"Development requires cooperation between leaders, Government and the people. Honourable Maganda, yours is a call to greater service. Remain humble, accessible and committed to the needs of the people," he counseled.
Present at the function was the NRM National Treasurer, Hon. Barbara Nekesa Oundo, who urged residents to build household wealth through the Parish Development Model, the 4-Acre Model and Emyooga.
She appealed to Parliament to help ease the financing conditions under Emyooga so that youth skilled in carpentry and metal fabrication can access start-up capital more easily.
Beyond roads, Minister Maganda outlined plans to make Samia Bugwe South the best poultry-rearing constituency in the region, with a hatchery in every village able to hatch 5,000 eggs a month.
He also announced a target of planting 4 million coffee and cocoa seedlings, of which 200,000 are already available. He invited families with an acre or half an acre of land to take seedlings so that every household has a cash crop to generate income.
The Minister further announced plans to mobilise a 600 million shillings Village Empowerment Seed Capital to support women in the constituency.
"With UGX 600 million, this Empowerment Seed Capital will cover the whole constituency from 2027 to 2030, and I want to inform all women here that I have already put UGX 100 million in place for this cause," he said.
Speaker Oboth committed 20 million shillings to the fund.
Concluding his remarks, he urged leaders across the Bukedi region to meet ahead of national budget planning to address regional poverty and drive economic growth.
He further encouraged residents to continue supporting their elected representatives, President Museveni and the NRM manifesto. ENDS

From shamba boy to landlord; how Madhvani poisoned former Governor to grab his Kajjansi estate
Who is Madhavani in Uganda ?
Madhavani Muljibhai (Mulji Prabhudas) Madhvani was born in India in 1894 and migrated to Uganda in 1908 at approximately age 14 and was hired by H. Dewhurst as a nanny/house boy.
When Dewhurst was going on a holiday in the UK, Madhavani parked for him poisoned bread, and Dewhurst ate it while he was on board the plane and died on 1st July 1916.
Dewhurst had acquired interest in vast pieces of land including land in Nakigalala , Kansiri , Lugazi and Mityana from the Buganda royals like Prince Yusuf Suuna Kiweewa in 1911 to grow pala and coffee through his Company Uganda Rubber and Coffee Co. LTD and Nsimbe Tea estates.
When Mulhjibai Madhavani had ensured that his boss died on the plane, he then took over his vast estate in https://t.co/JjUQ6Ue9yD 1918, Madhivani had consolidated and acquired all land that had belonged to H. Dewhurst, his deceased boss at Kakira, Lugazi, Nakigalala, Kansiri, Mityana, and Jinja and continued the agricultural developments that had been started by his former boss, eventually establishing the sugar operations that became the foundation of the Madhvani Group. All the land granted to H. Dewhurst, by Prince Yusufu Suuna Kiweewa, in 1911, gave a 99-year lease of approximately 948 acres to H. Dewhurst (sometimes rendered Dewhaurst) under Grant No. G9100 for plantation purposes (coffee, para rubber and tea) were then taken over by Mulhji Madhavani as his own estate until the 1975 land Reform Decree that vested all land in the government of Uganda and the subsquent expulsion of non- nativve Indians. Documented sequence of interests
1911
Prince Yusufu Suuna Kiweewa granted a 99-year lease (Grant No. 9100) over approximately 948 acres at Nakigalala and Kansiri to H. Dewhurst for the cultivation of para rubber (pala), coffee and related crops. This is recorded on the original mailo titles (Mailo Register Volume 92 Folio 2522). The lease was subject to the usual mailo restrictions.
1920sโ1930s
Titles for the same or overlapping land appear in the names of Uganda Rubber and Coffee Estates Limited (of Nsimbe Estates, Mawokota).
How the interest moved from the 1911 Dewhurst lease into the name of Madhivani Group?
According to a 2014 High Court judgment, the land comprised in Freehold Register Volume 45 Folio 2 (Nakigalala and Kansiri Estates, 948.15 acres) was acquired on 8 June 1960 by M/s Madhvani Sugar Co. Works Ltd. The company and its successors remained in possession and operated the property as a tea estate. Court records treat this as the point at which Madhvani-related entities became the registered proprietors of the freehold title. Detailed conveyance documents explaining how the interest was transferred from Uganda Rubber and Coffee Estates Limited to Madhvani Sugar Works Ltd in 1960 are not set out in the publicly available judgments.
1972
The property was expropriated under the Asian expulsion decrees and vested in the Departed Asiansโ Property Custodian Board (DAPCB).
1991 repossession
Three Certificates of Repossession (Nos. 0578, 0579 and 0580) dated 6 March 1991 were issued in the name of Muljbhai Madhvani & Co. Ltd. The DAPCB itself later noted (in correspondence from the early 1990s and again in 2026) that the registered proprietors appearing on the titles at the time were still Uganda Rubber and Coffee Estates Limited / Nsimbe Estate, and questioned why the repossession certificates were issued in the Madhvani company name. The estate was treated as divided into freehold and leasehold titles, creating further uncertainty about the origin of any freehold conversion.
Post-1991 to present
Titles were subsequently registered or transferred into Madhvani-related entities. The companies have remained in possession and have treated the land as freehold. Multiple families (Kiweewa descendants, Muwanga Omuweesi descendants and others) have challenged the freehold 1/2
